St John's House and attached brick

House. Early/mid C19, altered late C19. Flemish-bond brick,
stone stepped voussoirs, bays and doorcase, bracketed hipped
slate roof with brick stack to right. Double-depth plan. 2
storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. Windows to the first
floor have flat arches to C19 horned 2/2-pane sashes. The
central entrance bay steps forward slightly; the doorcase is
set in wide semicircular gauged brick arch, it has plain
painted stone inner arch with moulded cornice imposts on
painted iron Tuscan columns and wooden antae. The 8-panel
curved door, in concave recess, has ornamental fanlight; an
inner door, formerly 8-panel, has late C19 glazing to the top
with coloured and engraved margin panes; the outer hall has
panelling with added moulding above and to sides of door. The
large single-storey late C19 semicircular bays to sides have
heavy cornices, curved corners to the tops of 2/2-pane sash
windows, foliate capitals to mullions and wide cills. INTERIOR
not inspected but noted as having early/mid C19 fireplaces and
other features. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: an English-bond brick
wall approx 3m high and 40m long attached to right return has
timber lintel to a hatch to left which gives onto garden.
