Two houses. c1830-50. Flemish-bond brick, stone stepped
voussoirs and cills, continuous slate roof with brick stacks
to right of each house. Double-depth plans. 2 storeys; each
house is 2-window range. Flat arches to first-floor windows,
semicircular arches and 6/6-pane sashes with margin panes to
both ground-floor windows. To left of each house is an 8-panel
door and semicircular fanlight with radiating glazing bars.
No.42 to left has bracketed eaves, late C19 horned 2/2-pane
sash windows to first floor, glazed top 4 panels of the door
and late C19 gabled hood on brackets with a wavy bargeboard
and horizontal planking below. The roof of No.40, without
bracketed eaves, has a plain gutter, C20 windows to first
floor and a swept gabled hood on slender columns with a
circular motif to centre, probably early/mid C19. INTERIORS
not inspected.
