Experimental smallholder's dwelling. 1919-20, for the Board of
Agriculture and Fisheries. Colourwashed cob on flint and brick
sill, plain tiled roof. Two storeys, 2 x 2 bays, the left bay
extended and gabled to rear. Off-centre entrance to stair lobby,
living room to left and kitchen and bathroom to rear. Reeded door
and later glazed porch. Sheet glass windows with concrete lintels.
Roof hipped and sprocketed, with 2 brick stacks, 5-flue stack to
left and 2-flue on ridge to right. Walls are of 47cm cob, reducing
in thickness on first floor, laid in approximately 45cm lifts with
slate d.p.c. and tile covering string course. Suspended timber
floors to front rooms. Original iron range in living room replaced
and larger windows inserted in left bay. Interior partitions of
brick, and reeded doors. The external wall finish is as originally
planned for the initial five DSIR experimental low cost houses.
