Experimental smallholder's dwelling 1919-1920, by Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research for the Board of Agricultural
and Fisheries, under supervision of W.R. Jaggard. Reinforced in-
situ concrete with flat concrete roof. Two storey. Standard plan
with central entrance, stair hall and service rooms to rear. In
situ concrete porch added c1940. Doors and windows replaced c1986
with diamond pattern double glazing. Walls are of 1 : 8 Portland
cement and local gravel, 12in thick reducing to 9in on first floor,
reinforced with vertical 'exmet' and horizontal 'temperature' 1/4in
reinforcing bars above and below openings. Precast first floor T
beams with screed. Precast roof trusses carrying 2in in-situ
concrete slab on 'hyrib' with Pudlo added. Roof later felted.
Internal partitions of precast concrete blocks. Precast lintels to
openings. 2in Pudlo cement damp proof course. One of the first
five experimental buildings to investigate economy of using local
materials.
