12/55 No 39 (Solstice Farm) and 41

Pair of experimental smallholders' dwellings. c1920-22 for the
Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. Cavity brickwork with slate
damp course, tiled roof. Two storeys, each cottage is of 2 bays
with roof carried down over single storey kitchen at gable ends.
Panelled door with 6 upper panes, and paned timber windows with
soldier course arches and tile drip course. Chamfered brick sills
bedded on tile. Roof sprocketed. Large 5-flue brick stacks on
hipped end to roof, and a 4-flue stack on party wall. Entrance to
No 41 has been altered to a glazed door, that to No 39 enclosed in
glazed porch. An example of a pair of dwellings using local
materials and traditional construction, following the initial
experimental dwellings.
