II
Two houses, one with restaurant attached. Built in three stages: to right is a three bay C14 building. At centre is a two-cell mid C16 section and to left a lower C17/C18 addition. Two storeys throughout. Timber-framed and plastered (Antrim House is roughcast). Plaintiled roofs; an axial C19 chimney of red brick.
The Old Counting House has a pair of C19 splayed bay shop windows under a continuous flat roof, and with a C19 doorway between them (late C20 framed and battened door). At first storey are three early C19 windows with small-pane cast iron casements. Antrim House and the left hand part of the Old Counting House have mid C20 windows, the latter with leaded glazing; each has a C20 framed and boarded door. The C14 structure is of unusual form for its date: the upper floor was jettied along the frontage and each bay was partitioned (at ground storey) from the next. In addition the two right-hand bays were partitioned down the centre, and possibly also the third. The resulting six small rooms indicate a non-domestic use, possibly shop units (the building faced onto the market place in C14). Very plain framing, with widely-spaced studding, arch-wind-braced. A splayed scarf joint with undersquinted butts in the rear wall plate. Rafters reused from an orignal roof probably of coupled-rafter form. Unchamfered square floor joists. The C16 section was also long-wall jettied; a bracket with shaft beneath (now inside the building). Heavy framing with close-studding, unchamfered floor joists and good undecorated crownpost roof.
