Description

HAUGHLEY DUKE STREET (NORTH SIDE)
TM 0262

8/66 No.1
-

GV II

House, late C17 with earlier core. 3-cell plan. 2 storeys. Timber-framed
and plastered. Roman pantiled roof, once thatched; an axial chimney with
rebuilt C19 shaft of red and gault brick; a C19 end chimney to right. Mainly
C19 small-pane casements, some renewed in C20. A C19 entrance door to left
with 6 fielded panels; a C20 partly-glazed panelled door at lobby-entrance
position. The house was almost entirely rebuilt in late C17 or early C18, but
probably began as a medieval house with mid C16 alterations. To left is a
service cell with heavy unchamfered medieval joists. The hall at centre has
small on-edge joists typical of c.1700. A large axial chimney with open
fireplace to hall, and behind it a parlour cell with good roll-and-cavetto
moudled beams and joists of mid C16 type. All studwork is however primary-
braced suggesting virtual reconstruction c.1700.
