The church of St Mary Magdalene was known in 1089 when Henry Ferrers who held Stapleford under the King gave it to the monks at Turbury. In 1227 the church had a chapel of ease near the village of Saxby and that link remains. In 1560 the patronage came to George Sherard and continues in the gift of the owners of Stapleford Park. About 1650 the south aisle was rebuilt by Abigail widow of William the first Lord Sherard. In 1770 Robert, third son of Philip Sherard, Rector of Teigh 1743, Prebendary of Salisbury, and later of Southwell, succeeded his brother Bennett to become 4th Earl of harborough. He built Holy Trinity Teigh in 1782 and this lovely Georgian church in 1783, followed by St Peter Saxby and its rectory in 1788, all to the designs of George Richardson. (Photo Mar 2007).
