Inscription and 14 children on brass to Geoffrey Sherard d1490 and wife Joyce, Church of St Mary Magdalene, Stapleford Park.

Inscription: Hic iacent corporae Galfredi Sherard Armiger et Joisie consortis sue filie Thome Assheby de Louesby Armigeri qui quidem Galfriedus obiit (space) die mente (space) Anno Domini MCCCCLXXXX. Et praedicta Joisia obiit Sexto decimo die Septembris Anno Domini Millesimo CCCCoLXXXXIIo cuio quaque animaque et omni exp(r)eanoque deus propicietur dei pace requiescant Amen. My translation: Here lie the bodies of Geoffrey Sherard Esquire and Joyce his consort, the daughter of Thomas Ashby of Lowesby, Esquire, which Geoffrey died ( ) day in the month of ( ) in the Year of our Lord One thousand four hundred and ninety. And the aforesaid Joyce died the Sixteenth day of September AD 1492 and upon whose souls in all hopes (of His return) may God have mercy. Let them rest in the peace of God. Amen.
The four shields accompanying the brass are: 1) Argent a chevron gules between three torteauxes (Sherard) 2) Field with two bars 3) Field with a chevron invected between three crosses bottonee (?Burton) 4) Field with argent three leopards faces jessant de lis sable (Woodford). (I had expected to see Ashby of Loseby Leics Argent a lion rampant sable and a chief gules; alternatively Ashley of Lowesby Argent a lion rampant sable crowned or). (Photo Sept 2015).
