Fleecing and washing shop with drying shed over. Probably mid C19. Brick
with pantile roof. Rectangular on plan, approximately 14 metres by
3 metres; stands over a stream at the south side of former tannery, with
water entering building at east end. North side: low 2 storeys, 8 first-
floor openings. Doorway to left (door missing) and 2 openings to right
beneath timber lintels; series of wide first-floor openings running full
length of building. Similar first-floor openings to south side. West
gable-end: 3 ground-floor openings beneath timber lintels, doorway to first
floor. East gable-end: round arch to stream culvert, 2 ground-floor
openings beneath timber lintels, 2 wide first-floor openings with timber
lintels supporting a third similar opening in the gable above. Interior:
ground floor contains a tank at the east end, flooded by the stream,
approximately 5 metres long and 2 metres wide, and divided laterally by
timbers into 13 compartments, with a narrow plank platform and a flagged and
brick-paved floor on the north side. A culvert carries the stream under the
remainder of the building. At the east end is a pit with a large iron
washing drum set in a wooden tank. First-floor openings formerly had
Stevenson screens for ventilation. The earliest structures in the tannery,
ruinous at time of resurvey, appear to be C18 - early C19. The tannery
ceased operating earlier this century.
