Description

MARAZION TREVENNER SQUARE, Marazion
SW 5230-5330
5/74 Trevenner Farmhouse and Trevenner
Cottage

GV II

House, now 2 houses. Probably circa early C16, extended in the C17 remodelled in the
C18 and partly rebuilt circa late C19 incorporating some C16 stone fragments.
Granite and killas rubble with granite dressings. Scantle slate roofs with brick
chimneys over the gable ends plus lateral stack, rear left. Some C17 hand-made
crested clay ridge tiles over the rear wing. Cast-iron ogee gutters.
Plan: irregular L-shaped plan. Probably originally a 3-room through passage plan,
extended in the C17 with service wing at roughly right angles behind the higher end
room, left. The through passage was flanked by 2 thick stone walls but the left hand
wall was removed recently (1986). The front wall and gable end left of the passage,
the right hand gable end, part of the rear wall and the left hand rear corner of the
wing were rebuilt circa late C19.
Exterior : 2 storeys. Overall 7 window north front:, 4 window front of Trevenner
Farmhouse built forward, left, and 3 window front of Trevenner Cottage, right.
Trevenner Farmhouse has doorway left of middle. Reused C16 fragments over the
doorway and left of the doorway including the outer frame of the left hand window.
The fragments include : 3 light mullioned window heads or sills, jambstones,
hoodmoulds, corbels and 4-centred arched window heads. Trevenner Cottage, right, has
the original square-headed doorway of the former through passage, left (now blocked).
Present doorway, left of middle. Rear of the passage is a jambstone with pyramid
stop.
The rear wing has 2 C17 windows with chamfered frames and stooling for central
mullions, otherwise C18 remodelled openings. Chamfered lintel over blocked window
opening in rear gable end.
Interior : C16 features: partly blocked corbelled fireplace over right-hand through
passage wall serving chamber, right (now with C19 iron grate). C17 features: in the
wing a chamfered and stopped cross beam and 2 trusses with pegged lap-dovetailed
collar joints. Lime-washed pegged lower roof structure in Trevenner Cottage probably
C18.
An early house, rare in this part of Cornwall, (that is a house with identifiable
early features) and though remodelled in the C19, much early fabric and some
interesting details survive.
