Gates, gate piers and screen walls. Late C18. For the Dundas family of
Aske Hall, probably by John Carr of York. Sandstone ashlar, wrought-iron =
gates. Inner main gate piers, flanking carriage drive gates, are linked by
screen walls containing pedestrian gates to lesser terminating gate piers.
Inner gate piers: square on plan; chamfered rusticated quoined with
vermiculation on quoins; square bases; cornices, and above, blocking with
festoons and pyramidal caps. Outer gate piers: square plan; chamfered
rusticated quoined; square bases; cornices and pyramidal caps. Screen
walls: each has plinth; round-arched opening and entablature which lines
through with cornices of piers. Gates, possibly later: square-section bars
with spear finials; ogee profile to top of all gates.
