9/68 Obelisk approximately
one hundred and fifty
metres east of Newton
House
GV II
Wellhead and obelisk. Possibly 1882. Tooled sandstone and sandstone
ashlar with timber sluice gate. Square on plan. Stepped plinth below
tall die with overhanging flat cap, surmounted by obelisk. East and west
sides of die carry long Latin inscriptions. East side reads:
Quae dat aquas, saxo laiet
Hospita nympha sub imo
Sic tu cum dederis dona,
Latere relis
Nesciat sinistra Quid
Dextra porrigat
West side largely illegible but the name Ionas Browne and the characters
LXXXII are visible. Obelisk said to commemorate the transformation of
moorland into a pleasure garden.
