10/157 John Cross
- II
Wayside cross and boundary marker. Medieval socket stone anti C18 boundary
stone. Hollowed rectangular socket stone. Boundary stone with initial
'C' inscribed on east face replaces cross shaft and is now recumbent. John
Cross was located between a bog and a steep slope, and was one of a series
of waymarkers on the old road from Whitby to Pickering via Red Gate and May
Beck. Possibly named after John de Steyngrave, Abbot of Whitby 1245-1258.
