4/4 Darras Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse and attached shippon. Probably C17 origins extended in later C17, in C18
and in C19. Granite rubble walls with rag slate roofs, gable end on left and hipped
end on right. Stone rubble axial stacks.
Plan: The house is built down the slope with the ground rising to left. Original
plan uncertain. The house probably had a 2-room and cross or through passage plan,
the 2 rooms heated by end stacks with a stair turret to the rear of the right-hand
room. In the circa later C17 the house was extended with a further (narrow) 1-room
plan range heated by an end stack on the lower right-hand side. In the circa C18 the
house was extended on the higher left-hand end with a shippon. In the circa late C19
the house was extended on the lower right hand end by a 1-room plan service range.
Exterior: 2 storeys. The ground slopes down to right and rises steeply to the left
so that the shippon which is attached on the higher left-hand side, has a continuous
roof line with the adjoining farmhouse on right. The service range on far right has
a slightly lower roof. Asymmetrical 3-window front. The farmhouse has a lean-to
stone rubble porch flanked by two probably C20 2-light casements with two similar
casements on first floor. To right, in the circa later C17 extension are probably
C20 2-light casements on the ground and first floor with a stone rubble buttress
between the two ranges. There is a lean-to porch to far right. The shippon which is
attached on the higher left hand side is of single storey with a C19 stable-type door
to right and one-light window to left.
The rear elevation is unaltered and has a stair projection to the rear of the right
hand room of the earlier range.
Interior: Not accessible.
