Handed pair of cottages 1859 possibly by Edward Hodkinson (cf Aldford;
Pevsner and Hubbard p.58) for the 2nd Marquis of Westminster. Brown
brick Flemish bond with gabled grey slate roof. l½ storeys T shaped
(projection to rear). Deep label-mould lintels and cills of red
sandstone. Iron lattice casements in wood sub-frames to front and
ends. 2 chimneys (one central on main ridge, one on rear ridge), each
with four rectangular flues. Boarded front doors.
Interiors: Some 4-panel and some boarded doors. Large chamfered pine
beams over parlours.
A little-altered example of several contemporary groups of cottages of
similar design on the Eaton estate, in a simplified Jacobean manner.
