Outbuilding. c1750, altered C19 and C20. Probably by John Carr for William
Gossip. Coursed magnesian limestone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 x 1
bays. Large quoins. East side facing courtyard to rear of Thorp Arch Hall
(q.v.): 3 C20 casements in C19 chamfered ashlar surrounds beneath 3 C20
casements in plain openings; eaves band, moulded gable copings; truncated end
stack on left and short, corniced ridge stack to right of centre. Right
return: casement inserted below pedimented gable with blind Diocletian window
in tympanum. Left return: original doorway with deep lintel; matching gable.
Interior; altered; later roof trusses. The Diocletian motif is
characteristic of James Paine who corresponded with Gossip about the proposed
house at Thorp Arch prior to the involvement of John Carr; it is possible
that the outbuildings are part of some original scheme suggested by Paine
although executed by Carr.
