COAL CANAL
8/28 Caisson House
GV II
House, possibly a remodelling of a row of earlier cottages. Circa 1830s, probably
for the Somerset Coal Canal Company. Ashlar, C20 tiled roof behind a parapet
which has pierced triangular cresting, moulded cornice. 2 storeys. 9 bays with
pilaster strips at the ends and between bays 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 5 and 6, and 7 and
8, rising through the parapet as pedestals. Glazing bar sash windows in raised
pain surrounds; canted bay windows to bays 3 and 7. Central door in projecting
ashlar porch with moulded surround and cornice. The house is so named due to
its proximity to the site of the 1790s caisson lock which was the initial and
innovatory means of achieving the change in level on this branch of the canal.
