Henlow Grange
GV II*
Small country house, now converted to health clinic. Mid C18, probably
replacing an earlier building. Red brick with chequerwork patterning in
vitrified headers. Hipped clay tile roofs. Double pile plan. Main block
of 3 storeys, with 2 storey wing to NW and single storeyed wing to SE, the
whole structure on a basement. Front elevation to SW: 3:5:3 window ranges.
All sashes with glazing bars and wood valances under gauged brick flat arches.
Main block has central doorway approached by flight-of stone-steps. Part-
glazed door with lugged surround and heavy keystone. Pedimented porch with
lonic columns and pilasters. Main block has projecting piers at angles,
each rising to chimney stack with moulded cornice. Brick band at first floor
level to all 3 blocks. Central block has heavy moulded cornice breaking
forward around corner piers. LH block has lightly moulded cornice. Plain
parapets to LH and central blocks. RH block has plain parapet with recessed
panels following window spacing. Later addition to R of RH block, also with
recessed panels continuing window arrangements. Interior: ground floor
retains many decorative features. Panelling to library and hall, the hall
with broken pedimented door surrounds. Late C19 Peacock room has hand-
painted Chinese wallpaper depicting plants and birds, Rococo style fireplaces,
and fluted Ionic columns and pilasters to central archway. Staircase has
spiral turned balusters and panelling.
