House, C17, extended in C18 and C19. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed
with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays aligned approx. NW-SE with axial chimney
stack one bay from SE end, forming a lobby-entrance to NE. External chimney
stack at NW end, and C18 extension beyond it, of painted brickwork. SE end
faced with painted brickwork. At rear of NW end, parallel range, 2 storeys, of
painted brickwork with gabled roof of red clay pantiles, late C19,and single
storey lean-to extension at SE end of it. At NW end of main range, large lean-
to extension with external chimney stack at SW end, C19, of brickwork, roofed
with C20 corrugated red clay tiles. Bread oven to Nil of stack. Single storey
lean-to extension in W angle, brick, roofed with C20 interlocking red tiles. 2
storeys. NE elevation, 5-panel door, the top panel glazed, in wooden doorcase
with pedimented head on consoles. 2 french windows, early C19, with external
louvred shutters, and 2 C19 casement windows. First floor, 3 C19 casement
windows and one C20 reproduction. Wooden parapet with short modillions below
eaves. Hipped roof. At the NW end a painted brick wall of full 2-storey height
extends the facade to conceal the lean-to extension behind, with the same
parapet treatment, forming a very long main elevation. The SE gable of the rear
range has carved bargeboards, late C19, of the same style as at Elm Cottage,
Debden Green. Ground floor room to NW of axial chimney stack has a restored
Axial beam and a staircase with 2 twist-turned balusters to each tread, late
C19. The ground floor room to the NW is lined with pine panelling, has an C18
wooden fire surround and a corner cupboard of semi-circular form. Cellars below
this room and NW extension. The first floor room at the SE end has an arched
ceiling of elliptical curvature, early C19. Clasped purlin roof.
