Beer Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16 or early C17 possibly with late medieval origins,
extended in C18 or C19. Rendered cob and stone rubble walls. Gable ended thatched
roof. 3 stacks - 1 at right gable end is projecting stone rubble with a brick
shaft, the 2 other stacks are brick - 1 axial and 1 at the left gable end.
Plan: 3-room and through or cross passage plan, lower end to left. Hall stack
backs on to the passage. The house was probably extended at the higher end in the
C18 or C19 as it becomes slightly wider.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front mainly of C19 2-light small-paned
casements with 1 C20 3-light casement to left on ground floor and 2 C19 sashes to
the right, the left-hand one early C19. To left of centre is late C19 panelled and
glazed door to passage under C20 doorhood.
Interior: hall has 1 richly moulded cross beam with hollow step stops and a small
beam or joist running from it to the fireplace (which is blocked). No access to
first floor or roofspace at time of survey but it is possible that early or even
medieval timbers and thatch still survive. Other early features may also be
concealed by later modernisation.
