2 semi-detached villas and attached railings to No.3. Numbered
right to left, described left to right. c1830-50. Architects
probably RW and C Jearrad. Stucco over brick with slate roof
and stucco party-wall and end stacks with cornices and iron
railings. Double depth plan with outer side stairhalls.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics and basement (to centre), 8
first-floor windows, the central 4 of which break forward, and
with projecting single-storey porches to end ranges; to rear
the end ranges project and are of 3 storeys, with 2-storey and
attics to centre, all on basement. Stucco detailing includes:
quoins to angles; tooled architraves to windows: those to
first floor are eared and those to ground floor have cornices
on consoles and sills. Mainly 6/6 sashes, taller and with
blind boxes to ground floor, 2 x 1/1 sashes to ground floor of
No 3. Wide eaves on brackets; 4 attic roof dormers have
casements and broken pediments. Entrances: flight of
roll-edged steps to solid porches with Ionic pilasters; that
to No.2 has additional projecting glazed porch with
side-lights and fanlight (some coloured glass), No 3 has
round-arched opening with keystone and fanlight; double
4-panel doors (that to No.2 part-glazed); frieze, cornice and
blocking course. No.2 retains 4 x tall end, party-wall and
lateral stacks with cornices. Right return has round-arched
staircase sash. Rear: end ranges have tripartite sashes to
first and second floors: 6/6 between 2/2; similar to ground
floor, No.3, whilst No.2 has pair of 6/6 sashes, both with
tooled architraves and cornices on consoles. Some 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURE: railings with stick balusters to one side
of steps of No.3.
Forms a group with Douro Lodge (qv), and Nos 4 and 5 (qv), and
No.6, (qv) Douro Road, of overall Classical design with
Italianate touches to the roof and dormers. The symmetrical
design consists of 2 pairs of semi-detached villas between
detached villas.
