Pair of semi-detached villas, now flats. c1830-1835.
Architect: RW Jearrad. Ashlar over brick with hipped slate
roof and iron balconies. Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, with 4-stage 'towers', 1:4:1
first-floor windows and 2-storey, 2-bay ranges set back to
either side; service ranges to rear. Double depth plan with
projecting porches to angles of main range and recessed
single-bays. Ashlar detailing includes tooled architraves to
all windows, those to first floor are eared, those to ground
floor are round-arched and have continuous impost band.
Casement windows throughout, those to ground floor are tall
and have fanlights. Wide eaves on paired brackets. Porches
have round-arched openings to 3 sides with tooled heads on
imposts and keystones, flights of roll-edged steps to panelled
doors with fanlights. Towers are set back from entrance bays
as 4th storey, and have round-arched openings.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ground-floor windows have individual
balconies with embellished rods and anthemion motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: RW and C Jearrad bought the Lansdown
development from Pearson Thompson c1829-30, dismissing his
architect, JB Papworth, and continuing building to their own
designs.
