Country house now divided into flats. 1862 with later
alterations. By Whitfield Dawkes, for the Humphries family.
Red brick with blue brick diaperwork and limestone ashlar
dressings. Hipped Welsh-slate roofs with brick stacks
concealed behind parapets.
PLAN: roughly square on plan with entrances to NE and SE
elevations and one other decorative elevation to SW.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. In Jacobethan style having deep plinth;
moulded string courses; quoined angles and surrounds;
mullioned windows, some transomed, with hoodmoulds; ornate
roofscape with decorative parapets, turrets, spires and
finials.
SE elevation: 5 bays, that at centre breaking forward below
taller gable; at each end, a 3-stage polygonal turret with
embattled conical cap. Outer bays have cross-windows with
moulded surrounds and hoodmoulds, those on ground floor
incorporating decorative relief panels as keystones and with
figurative stops to hoodmoulds.
Central bay has 1st-floor oriel window with tiered pyramidal
roof surmounted by decorative finial and flanked by narrow
lancets; remodelled door and brick surround.
Stepped brick parapet with moulded stone coping and decorative
stone panels on either side of taller central gable which has
4 stone spirelets with decorative iron finials.
NE elevation: gabled entrance-bay breaks forward and has two
large pointed-arched stair-windows with mullions, transoms,
hoodmoulds, decorative stops and coloured glass; 2-storey
bay-window with tiered pyramidal roof; further 3-pane lights
and decorative external chimney; stone parapet with quatrefoil
panels.
SW elevation: 5 asymmetrical bays with plainer 3-bay wing
projecting on left. Gableted right-hand bay, flanked by
turrets, has 2-storey canted bay-window with pyramidal stone
roof. Near-central gabled bay projects and has 1st-floor
window of 4 stepped lights, those at centre under pointed
arch; moulded pointed-arched doorway (now window) below.
Further doorway to bay 4 and a stepped 3-light window on each
floor, that on ground floor with pointed-arched lights and
decorative spandrels. Openwork parapet with cusped panels;
spirelets to central gable; decorative external chimney
between left-hand bays.
INTERIOR: northern entrance-hall has pointed-arch arcade with
heavily-ordered arches, stiff-leaf capitals, stiff-leaf
ceiling cornice, stone staircase with decorative wrought-iron
balusters, and decorative 9-panel doors.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the house was built for the Humphries family,
who were machine-makers, on the site of a former farm.
Whitfield Dawkes was also the architect of Cirencester
Agricultural College.
