Stables and carriage house, now visitors' centre and workshops. 1820, by Sir
Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield, with later C19-C20 alterations. Brick
front with sides and rear of coursed ironstone rubble with brick dressings;
later rendering, slate roof. Classical Revival style. Rectangular in plan;
forms east side of stable-yard. Single storey, 7 bays; symmetrical. Central
pedimented bay breaks forward, end bays recessed. Plinth, late buttress at
left corner, band at impost level. Bays 3, 4 and 5 have segmental arched
carriage openings with pairs of plank doors under fanlights with glazing bars.
Similar opening to bay 2 with single pane window beneath fanlight. Bay 6 has
a round-headed recess with casement. Bay 1 has a plank door under a low
segmental arch with a recessed rectangular panel above, and bay 7 double doors
beneath a similar panel. Hipped roof. The right return facing the Park has a
gabled pedimented central section breaking forward with a band interrupted at
impost level by a round-headed recess containing a casement. All casements
have glazing bars.
