11/16 Greenways
GV II
Range of cottages, once 4, then 2, now 1 dwelling. C16 origin, mainly late
C18, with C19 alterations. Brick and thatch. 1 storey and attic, 8 bays with end
bays outshot. Prominent roof has eaves raised above the upper windows,
and at each end is brought to a lower eaves above wings which extend forward:
the east end is ½-hipped and there are inset dormers at the rear. The main
part has walls of red brickwork in Flemish bond, on a flint base, with cambered
openings to the ground-floor: the east wing is rendered and the west has
painted brickwork. Casements. One front doorway (c. 1900) with moulded canopy
on brackets (a copy of that at Pear Tree Cottage), but old photographs indicate
that there were once 3 doors on the front (not in the position of the present
door). Within, the division of the central part into 3 bays, and a massive
chimney, between 2 of them, as well as old floor beams, suggests an origin as
a timber-framed building.
