The White House
(Formerly listed asHornshill Cottage)
II
Dwelling, reputed to have been at some period an Inn. C17 and later. Painted rubble, some squared marlstone block in south-east gable, to A38. L-plan with return wing at back, north side, stack one bay in from gable to road. South-west facade, two storeys, irregularly spaced two or three-light casements under wood lintels; gable to road, three-light casement under wood lintol and remains of stone drip, plus two-light casement with some leading. Return gable, north side, wide plank door (to cellar) with wood lintel, two small two-light casements over; some evidence of this part being raised, in brickwork. Entrance through C20 door in re-entrant angle under modern lean-to open verandah.
Interior: large open fire, scratched on bressumer 'W.H. 1770'; timber framed partition opposite; staircase was formerly to right of this fireplace, which was probably originally at the external gable wall, the existing two-storey unit to the A38 being a later addition. Stone steps to cellar in return wing.
A property of the Berkeley Estate at time of survey, this building lies up on an embankment beside the A38, and is prominent in approach from the south.
