19/85 The Forge House and
Joiner's House

GV II

House, now 2 houses. Mid-late C18 with C19 alterations and extensions to
rear. For Nelthorpe Estate. Coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings
and stacks, brick to upper section of left gable end; formerly colour-washed
throughout. Brick additions to rear. Pantile roof. Plan: 3 rooms to front
with lobby-entry to right of centre, later entrance hall to left;
contemporary outshut with later wing to rear right, later addition with rear
wing to rear left. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Quoins to first
floor. C20 half-glazed door to right beneath segmental arch, similar door
to left beneath inserted soldier arch. 2 sashes to right with margin
lights, flush wooden architraves, sills and segmental-headed brick
surrounds; similar broader sash to left. First floor: similar sashes
beneath lintels at eaves level. Stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice.
Brick tumbling to gables. Double-span roof to left, catslide roof to right.
Axial stack to right of centre, stack to rear left. Interior not
investigated. Brick ranges adjoining to rear of no special interest.
