13/36 St Mary's Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C16, refaced C18, extended and remodelled late C18, with some
mid-C20 alterations. Timber-frame clad in painted rubble with some brick
dressings and slate roof. L-plan, limbs extending to north and east. The
former of three framed bays, the latter probably of three framed bays,
extended to east in rubble. Stacks both in east limb, one to east of the
first bay, one on the former gable end, both with brick shafts. South front
of two storeys with one plus five windows, that to left of three lights under
a segmental head, then two 3-light casements flank one of two lights, and
finally two of two lights. Ground floor has one plus four 3-light casements
under segmental heads. Entrance to left of centre has a C19 gabled slated
canopy with trellised sides, and a C20 boarded door. The right-hand gable
end has a timber truss with raked struts forming lozenges. Interior: ground
floor west room of east limb has chamfered ceiling beams. Cross-wing has two
trusses exposed upstairs with arch-braced cambered ties and two struts to
cambered collars. (RCHM, 3, p 84, no 23).
