GV II*
Farmhouse. c1750. Handmade brick, plain tiled roof with parapets at
gable ends and brick end stacks. Two storeys, attic and cellar with
chamfered plinth and moulded eaves cornice. 2:3:2 bays; the central
three break forward and are surmounted by a tall shaped gable; windows
all have moulded architraves; outer bays have 12-pane sash windows with
gauged flat heads on both floors; windows of central part have cambered
heads, the outer ones on both main floors are narrow 8-pane sashes;
they flank the central first floor 12-pane sash, above which is a
similar round-headed sash in the gable, and also the central 8-panelled
entrance door which also has a cambered head. Attic lights in gable ends.
Interior: noted as having retained its oak staircase with turned balusters;
parlour retains its original panelling and moulded cornice all in bold
relief; it has a moulded stone fireplace flanked by giant spiral pilasters
on high fluted pedestals. The rest of the interior is said to be virtually
unaltered. Rear wings at centre and right. On bricks either side of the
main entrance door are carved the initials "BS" and "AS"; the initials "MS"
are also carved on the right side of the gabled central part at about first
floor level; these initials are said to refer to the Stafford family. Inspected
inside. (VCH 4, p 266; BoE, p 140).
