Baroque monument to Sir Edward Smith alias Heriz, d.1707, marble and slate, Ionic columns carrying a crested stepped- forward cornice and a swagged, scrolled broken pediment, all enclosing an inscribed tablet. His Arms are Smith quartered with Heriz, 1 and 4 Gules, on a chevron argent, three crosses patee fichee sable, between as many bezants. 2 and 3 Azure, between a fess argent, three urcheons (hedgehogs) or. Inescutcheon (small inner shield) a hand gules signifying baronetcy. The pedestal has inscribed tablets and crests to his wives. 1) Constance, daughter of Sir William Spencer of Yarnley, baronet, she married at age 17 and d. 1681 aged 43. Impaled with Smith, the Spencer Arms, Quarterly, argent and gules, in 2 and 3 a fret or, over all a bend sable, three escallops argent. 2) Frances, daughter of Sir George Marwood, baronet, of Little Buskby, Yorks, she d. aged 57. Arms, Gules , a chevron ermine, between three goats heads erased argent . (Photo Jun 2007).
