Pair of cottages, now all one dwelling. C17 or earlier, altered.
Cruck-framed, with rear wall of stud and wattle-and-daub on a high battered
base of sandstone, formerly similar front wall rebuilt in brick, and both
built on a rather wavy line (presumably following wall plates which were
not straight), all plastered and painted white; corrugated sheet roof
covering thatch. Four bays (lst bay said to be an addition). Single
storey with low eaves; doorway to 2nd bay, one window to the left and 3 to
the right, all modern. Rear has windows of various sizes, mostly
horizontal rectangular, with glazing bars. Chimney on ridge at junction of
1st and 2nd bays, another at right gable. Interior: 3 full cruck trusses
of light scantling, one pair of purlins with curved windbracing below;
middle cruck truss has several vertical timbers in the centre, from the
tie-beam to the apex on the west side; at west gable, a bearer between the
purlins suggesting remains of smoke hood; exposed rafters with thatch-ties.
