Tunnel carriage drive, now a footway, connecting the Park
Estate with Derby Road. Begun 1844, and completed 1855 by TC
Hine of Nottingham for the fifth Duke of Newcastle.
Round-arched, unlined rock-cut tunnel, approx. 125m long. The
Derby Road entrance is covered by late C20 buildings.
In the centre, a large light shaft with rounded ends, approx
25m x 10m, with rock-faced stone lining and parapet walls,
with chamfered ashlar coping. At the north end, a stone winder
stair with stone piers and renewed iron handrails, leading to
a gateway on Upper College Street.
This building is an important feature of the Park Estate
development, largely directed by TC Hine as surveyor to the
Newcastle Estates.
