Farmhouse. Early C17, partially remodelled in C18 and 1886. Timber framed
with red brick infill and rebuilding; roughcast to west side and to south
gables, which have late C19 yellow brick cladding to ground and first floors;
slate roofs, hipped to east return of main range. Basic T-plan with gabled
range on west and gables in angle on south(central smaller) forming roughly
symmetrical front. 2 storeys and attics. Framing: exposed above sandstone
and red brick lean-to in angle to rear and to east side and north gable
end of main gabled range, which has regularly coursed and dressed sandstone
rubble below tie beam: close-set vertical posts with middle rail and upper
and lower collars. Positions of infilled windows visible to main range.
South front has one late C19 sash below each gable and prominent bay windows
to left and right. Central entrance through gabled porch with chamfered
pointed arch and datestone "RRM 1886" above. Five C17 grotesque heads
and brackets survive at tie beam level of gables. West front of gabled
range has three C19 glazing bar sashes to first floor and one to lower left.
Central doorway and contemporary canted bay window to right. Prominent
red brick ridge stack with 4 attached and rebated shafts and toothed capping
at junction with main range and internal end stack (also with toothed capping)
to left. Prominent C18 integral red brick end stack to east end of main
range. Interior. Many orginal features concealed by C19 remodelling
but timber frame fragmentarily exposed throughout and boxed-in ceiling beams
survive to ground and first floors. Ladder-type staircase to small first-
floor room to rear and oak winder staircase to attic. Several plank doors.
C17 roof structure apparently complete. Main gabled range has collar and
tie beam roof in 3 bays with chamfered double purlins and straight windbraces.
