Farmhouse, now house. Early C17, extended late C17 with later additions
and alterations. Timber framed with rendered infill and partial brick
rebuilding; slate roof. Original 2-cell plan with central baffle entry
extended by one bay to right in late C17 when roughly central 2-storey
gabled porch was also added. C17 catslide outshut to rear. Right bay
used as smithy in C19 and early C20. 2 storeys. Framing: square
and rectangular panels, 4 from cill to wall-plate with long and short
straight tension braces to early C17 part. Collar and tie beam truss
to left gable end with V-struts from collar. Porch has 5 rectangular
panels from cill to formerly jettied tie beam; V-struts from thin collar.
Late C17 addition has square panels to rear but front and gable end largely
rebuilt in brick (note dentilled eaves cornice), former painted black
and white in imitation of timber frame. Outshut to rear on left retains
timber frame, although part of roof slightly raised in C20. Four C19
casements directly below eaves, 2 on each side of porch, which has similar
window to first floor. Matching late C20 casements in corresponding
position to ground floor, second from left in position of former doorway.
Porch has central C20 panelled door in C19 wooden pedimented surround.
Salop Fire Insurance plate numbered 2129 above. Prominent ridge stack
rebuilt in C19 brown brick to left of porch and integral end stack to
right. Interior. Timber frame exposed throughout. Massive former
central stack has stone inglenook fireplaces to eigher side, left, with
ogee stops to chamfered segmental wooden lintel, right with plainer chamfer-
ed wooden lintel. Plank door to right side of stack suggests presence
of former small lobby. Chamfered spine beam with ogee stops to left
ground-floor room and chamfered. ceiling beams to former right (now centre)
room. This has infilled doorway with segmental wooden lintel to right
wall (former right gable end). Wide boarded floor boards on first floor.
Original centre truss to left of huge stack has raking struts from tie
beam to principal rafter, partly concealed by stack suggesting that chimney
could be an insertion. Collar and tie beam truss to former right gable
end.
