Description

ACOMB ACOMB MILL
NY 9366
18/8 Old Mill

GV II

Mill, probably late C18. Roughly-squared stone with cut quoins; stone slate
roof. 3 storeys, 2 bays. Ground floor has boarded door on far left; 3-light
wooden-framed windows. Corniced left end stack. Mill House (q.v.) adjacent to
left. Right return shows low central opening to wheelpit; iron pivot above
for attachement of external steam engine.

Interior: overshot waterwheel with cast-iron hub and wooden spokes, with large
cast-iron flywheel above. Interior of main part of mill in poor condition at
time of survey, following fire damage.

The adjacent Birkey Burn did not maintain a sufficient flow to operate the mill
at all seasons, hence the need for the nearby windmill (Lanthorn Cottage, q.v.)
in the C18, and the use of a steam engine in the C19.
