WOOLPIT THE STREET (SOUTH WEST
TL 9762
SIDE)
5/166 No.1 (formerly listed
- as Premises on North corner
15.11.54 of Rag's Lane)
GV II
House, C16 in two stages with mid C19 remodelling. 2 storeys. 3 windows
(including central dummy) to The Street; a rear range of 3 windows fronts onto
Rags Lane. Timber-framed; the front elevation is encased in C19 gault brick.
The gable to Rags Lane and the rear wing are both plastered, the latter with
exposed close-studding. The ground storey wall has been pushed forwards to
give a flush facade, but the exposed joist-ends show that the wing was long-
wall jettied. Slated roof, probably once plaintiled. A group of 3 axial late
C16 or early C17 detached diagonally-set square chimneys. Mid C19 windows
with flat arches of gauged brick and small-pane sashes; to left is a flat-
roofed bay with twin sashes. The front range was built with a jetty at 1st
floor on 2 consecutive sides, of which a dragon beam remains as evidence.
Clasped purlin roof.
