Description

BLUNDESTON POUND LANE
TM 59 NW
2/10 The Rookery (formerly
27.11.54 listed as The Rectory)
II
House. Indications of C16 core, otherwise C18 with late C19 service range to
rear. Red brick, with a hipped roof of glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys. 4
windows, flush-frame sashes with glazing bars under flat brick arches; one C20
5-light casement window under a segmental arch to the left on the ground
floor. Asymmetrical doorway with 6-panel entrance door (the upper 4 panels
glazed) and rectangular fanlight, both inset with panelled reveals; reeded
architrave with corner roundels and a C20 plaintiled hood on wooden brackets.
The right hand ground floor room has a floorbeam with double concave moulding
and heavy plain joisting, probably early C16; no other work of this date is
visible. The house is considered to be the prototype of The Rookery in 'David
Copperfield' by Charles Dickens and is listed for this reason.
