II
House. 1785-6, by Sir John Soane for Nathaniel Rix. C19 alterations and
additions. Colourwashed red brick with a paired bracketed eaves cornice.
Hipped slated roof. 3 storeys. Narrow 3-bay entrance front facing south
west: Greek Doric entrance porch (probably an early C19 addition), inset
three-quarter glazed entrance door in 2 leaves, panelled reveals; the doorway
is approached by a short flight of steps. 2 semi-circular arched ground floor
windows (later casements), 3 narrow inset sash windows to first floor, a
single square sash window to 2nd floor. 3-bay main front with a full-height
central gabled wing set forward: originally this wing was single storey and
the alteration has been carefully made. Sash windows, tripartite on the
ground floor; to the left the angle between the wings is filled by a C19
conservatory. At the rear is a central recess from which projects a 2-storey
kitchen wing; in the recess at 2nd floor level is a Diocletian window. The
wing has been altered and there are later additions. 2 C19 rectangular stacks
in white brick with grouped flues. Well stair with stick balusters, a ramped
and wreathed handrail and carved tread-ends. The drawing room has a plaster
cornice with a key fret ceiling border and an original marble fireplace with
corner roundels. Sandon, Suffolk Houses, 1977, pp.314-5.
