The left hand half of the shield represents, Quarterly, 1st, Or, a harts bead cabossed sable attired gules, for Calder; 2nd, Gyronny of eight or and sable, for Campbell; 3rd, Argent a lymphad oars in action sable, for Lorne ; 4th, Per fess azure and gules a cross or, for Lort. In the 16th century the Calder heiress of the Thanes of Cawdor married Sir John Campbell, son of the 2nd Earl of Argyll, and was ancestor of the Earls of Cawdor The right hand half of the shield: Boteville: Barry of ten, or and sable. Thynne: Or (here argent) a lion rampant, tail nowed (knotted) gules. These families indicate that Lord Cawdor's wife was a daughter of the Marquess of Bath. (Photo Oct 2010).
