Description

Carron Company, Stirlingshire (embossed signature), 1936. Columnar cast-iron pillar box with swept frieze to shallow-domed cap, dentilled at rim. Base (painted black) with signature, shaft with 'EVIIIR' in raised Gothic lettering with crown above and 'POST OFFICE' below.

Statement of Interest

One of very few post boxes cast in the short reign of Edward VIII bearing his cipher 'EVIIIR'. A total of 271 letter boxes were made in 1936, 161 of which were pillar boxes. Only a handful of these are thought to remain. Located at corner of Albert Drive and Herriet Street.
