Description

H and D Barclay, 1882, variant of their palazzo-style
pattern for Glasgow's board schools. 2 storeys,
symmetrical 3-bay elevation to Albert Drive, wide 3-
light windows with pilastered mullions, fluted at
ground, sculptured panels at 1st floor, central bay
narrower with doorpiece at ground. Polished ashlar, band
course between floors, original T-shaped glazing
pattern, mutule cornice, piended slate roofs. Flank
elevations similarly detailed with recessed wide
centres. To Herriet Street a plainer and later range
(1901), as Albert Road Academy of similar scale with
symmetrical front.
Playground part enclosed by stone wall, part iron-
railed, square gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

D Barclay was apprehended for culpable homicide after

the collapse of a shed (see above reference and

subsequent issues).
