Description

Circa 1800. Single arch bridge with low ashlar parapet and splayed ends spanning Dalcairnie Burn. Reddish sandstone rubble with grey granite(?) rubble above arch; droved ashlar voussoirs.

Statement of Interest

The bridge was probably constructed under the auspices of John Loudon McAdam (1756-1836), on whose relatives' policies it was built. Quintin McAdam, son of John McAdam of Craigengillan and also an expert in road building, is likely to have also been closely involved in the contruction. John Loudon McAdam returned to Scotland from America in 1783 and began a significant programme of road and bridge building in Ayrshire. Indeed, many members of the McAdam family were managing road trusts in the early 19th century.

The bridge has a particularly spectacular setting when viewed from beneath the dramatic waterfall of the Dalcairnie Burn.
