Core is 18th century house originally called Berbeth - enlarged early 19th century and later romanticised when crowstepped gables added. Glazed Gothic arcaded porch extended along front and tall battlemented tower built at side, possibly by David Hamilton. Exceptional interior work by Jansen of Paris, 1902, to main hall, stair drawing room, boudoir and morning room, designed around French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry of circa 1700, particularly fine.
TThe stables help enclose the entrance court, and are listed separately. The lodge falls in Dalmellington Parish and is also listed. Upgraded B to A July 2001.
