WALL: 18th century; coped rubble wall; stones re-used from old house.
FIREPLACE: earlier 17th century, Renaissance design: arched recess; tapered pilasters with Ionic capitals; broad cornice above. Sculpture of 2 male heads in recess.
A-Group with Ravelston Tower, Mary Erskine School (Ravelston House), Dovecot, Entrance Gateway and Boundary Walls, Garden Wall of No 87, Queensferry Road Entrance Gate, ice-houses and 31 & 33 Ravelston Dykes Road. The old tower house at Ravelston was erected by George Foulis, who purchased the estate in 1620. The new mansion house was probably built by Alexander Keith in the late 18th-century; he died in 1792. The fireplace is from the old Tower House. A further section of wall incorporating an old fireplace from the Tower is listed at 87 Ravelston Dykes Road.
Information from former owner suggests that the two carved heads were student artwork from the Edinburgh College of Art purchased in the 1980s and placed within the fireplace.
