Description

Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan farmhouse with lower single and single storey and attic wings. Sandstone rubble and brick. Margins to square-headed window openings.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: later glazed gabled entrance porch to outer right; 2 single windows at ground to main house; 3 single windows at 1st floor.

W (REAR) ELEVATION: 7-bay, grouped 3-2-2. Single window to cat-slide porch to recessed 2-bay section; glazed timber door to re-entrant angle to left; single windows at ground and 1st floor to left. 3 single windows to single storey and attic section to left. 2 single windows at ground floor to advanced gabled section to right; single window to right at 1st floor.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: single windows at ground and 1st floor to gabled section to right; single window to left; single window to gabled brick extension to outer left.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2 timber entrance doors to 4-bay single storey section; narrow letterbox fanlights; sidelights to left; single windows to left of entrances. 2 timber entrance doors to 4-bay gabled section to right; letterbox fanlight to left entrance; flanking single windows; 2 single windows break eaves to form attic gables. Blank gable elevation.

Timber lying-pane sash and case windows. Slate roof; stone skews coped gablehead stacks; polygonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

Statement of Interest

Good example of early 19th century farmhouse architecture, with its interesting plan form and notable for the retention of its lying-pane glazing. Other listings on the Doonholm Estate include the gate lodge (Doonholm Road) in Ayr Burgh listings. (See also Ayr Parish listings).
