Earlier to mid 19th century with later addition. 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical house with single storey, single bay wing to right; single storey, lean-to addition at rear. Squared and snecked stugged cream sandstone; droved margins. Stugged quoins; stugged long and short surrounds to chamfered openings; stop-chamfered sandstone mullions; projecting cills. Coursed rendered elevation to SW.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: step to timber panelled door centred at ground; 3-pane fanlight; single window at 1st floor; bipartite windows at ground in flanking bays; single windows aligned at 1st floor. Bipartite window centred in single storey wing adjoined to right.
NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: single storey wing with timber door centred at ground; single opening aligned above; 2-leaf boarded timber doors in bay to right.
SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind elevation to main block. Single storey, lean-to addition to outer left.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 1998.
4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows to main house; 8-pane glazing in single storey wing. Grey slate roofs; timber bargeboards. Mutuled and corniced brick apex stacks to SW and NE; circular cans.
INTERIOR: not seen 1998.
BOUNDARY WALLS, RAILINGS AND GATES: low coped sandstone walls enclosing site; iron railings; iron gates.
With much of its original detailing intact, Earnslaw House is one of the most prominent houses in Leitholm's Main Street.
