In 1863, local businessman William Drummond commissioned William Barclay to erect this pyramid as a "monument to commemorate all who were martyred while seeking religious freedom". Each of its four faces bears a different inscription followed by a verse from the Book of Palms: "Union Banner", "Rock of Ages", "Throne of Right", "Covenant Rest". These are the titles of religious tracts published by the Drummond Tract Enterprise, which was established by William's brother, Peter Drummond.
