Wilson Sisters Memorial

Uploader's Comments

Erected through the efforts of William Drummond, a local seed-merchant in the 19th century who had a passion for commemorating Covenanters in the 17th century. Margaret Wilson was one of the 'Wigtown Marytyrs' drowned in the Solway Firth in 1685 for refusing to acknowledge royal supremacy over the Church of Scotland. The figures were erected in 1859 and the cupola added in 1867. The latter was the work of John Rochhead, designer of the National Wallace Monument on the Abbey Craig.
