Later 18th to early 19th century. Ashlar round-arched classical gateway with flanking quadrant walls, oriented to N. Base course; coping to wall; string course at impost; dentilled architrave and cornice. Round-arched gateway to centre with wrought-iron 2-leaf gate flanked by coupled pilasters; heraldic shield carved to plaque to centre beneath cornice. Quadrant walls ended by coped square-plan piers. Rubble policy walls extending either side.
The gate, according to Strang, is contemporary with the house, which was built in the 1794 and remodelled in 1819-20. Whether the gate is contemporary with the original building, or the remodelling is not clear. The Haining does not fall within the burgh boundary of Selkirk, being, instead, within Selkirk Parish. There was a lodge to SW of gate which is shown on the maps until 1964.
